# What is an MPAN?

An **MPAN** (Meter Point Administration Number) is the unique ID for your electricity supply point in Great Britain. It is also called a **supply number** or **S number**. Every home or business connected to the grid has one.

Your MPAN is not your account number with your energy supplier. It identifies the **physical meter point** on the network, so the DNO, supplier, and metering systems all refer to the same connection.

## Where to find your MPAN

Look on a recent electricity bill or your supplier's online account. It is often labelled **MPAN**, **supply number**, or **S number**.

The full number is usually **21 digits**, sometimes shown in groups. The **core MPAN** is the last **13 digits**. That core number is what installers and DNO forms most often ask for.

## What the digits mean (briefly)

The MPAN encodes which **distribution network** serves your property and which meter point you are. The first two digits of the core number are the **distribution identifier**, which links to your local [DNO (Distribution Network Operator)](/docs/guides/what-is-dno-uk-solar/).

You do not need to decode the MPAN yourself. Installers and your supplier use it when registering export meters, switching supplier, or notifying the DNO about solar or battery connection.

## MPAN and solar or battery export

When you add solar panels or a battery that can export to the grid, paperwork often asks for your MPAN. That ties your **generation or export meter** to the correct supply point.

Export payments (SEG), [G98 or G99](/docs/guides/what-is-g98-solar-connection-uk/) notification, and commissioning checks all use the MPAN so the DNO knows which connection on their network is involved.

**Check My Solar** does not store or display your MPAN. It reads live and historical data from **Fox Cloud** for **Fox ESS** systems. Your MPAN still matters for installation and export setup with your installer and DNO.

## FAQ

### Is MPAN the same as MPRN?

No. **MPAN** is for **electricity**. **MPRN** (Meter Point Reference Number) is for **gas**. They are separate identifiers.

### Do I need my MPAN to use Check My Solar?

No. Linking your **Fox ESS** inverter via **Fox Cloud** does not require your MPAN. You may need it for export registration or DNO paperwork with your installer.

### Can two homes share one MPAN?

No. Each distinct electricity supply point has its own MPAN. A flat with its own meter has its own MPAN.
